SR-24 and SR-24LE Clock Battery Warning & Replacement

When you start up the SR-24 or SR-24LE, a low battery warning symbol may appear if the internal coin cell battery is low or discharged. If you do not use the receiver's data logging feature, you can press the Select key to dismiss the message and continue with your sonde or line locate.

If data logging is enabled on your SR-24/SR-24LE, the receiver can store locate data on a microSD card located under the rubber cover at the bottom of the device. Each locate job is named as "Date + Time," and this information is provided by the on-board Real Time Clock (RTC). An internal coin cell battery maintains the time and date when the receiver is turned off. A dead battery affects file naming only, it does not affect location accuracy, performance, or the receiver's factory calibration.

Short-Term Workarounds

If you don't use the data logging feature, press the Select key to dismiss the message and continue with your locate.

If you do use the data logging feature you can set data logging to be OFF by default and enable it only after the receiver has obtained a GPS lock. Once the GPS lock is established, the clock will automatically update to the correct date and time. Be aware that obtaining a GPS lock can take 30 seconds or more and the time and date will be lost when the receiver is turned off.

Long-Term Solution: Battery Replacement

To permanently resolve the low battery issue, you need to replace the internal coin cell battery. The battery type is BR1632, though a CR1632 can also be used. The battery is located inside the receiver, which requires opening the case (refer to the images below).

We recommend having a service center replace the battery to avoid potential damage from static shock or mishandling. If you choose to replace the battery yourself, take care to avoid static discharge, which can seriously damage the electronics.

When replacing the battery, carefully unplug and re-plug the ribbon cable, and replace the zip tie securing the battery.

Important Note for Older SR-24 Units

The first SR-24 units shipped with the battery soldered to the circuit board. In these units replacement must be performed at the factory repair center in San Diego (1-858-244-6689, M – F 8 am to 4 pm PT). The replacement includes a new battery and an updated battery board, which allows future battery replacements by users or independent service centers.
