If a nearby signal (ANY signal, not necessarily the one you want to locate) overloads the circuitry of a SeekTech or NaviTrack receiver the Clipping indicator will appear in the center of the display. The receiver cannot locate a sonde or trace a line when the Clipping indicator is on screen.

Older versions of the SR-20 had an Automatic Attenuation Indicator to indicate when the signal was being attenuated (#1) and when attenuation was released (#2). This indicator was removed from newer versions of the SR-20 to simplify the interface. Newer receivers attenuate the signal as needed but do not display the indicator.

The photo below shows a high voltage line just inches from a sewer lateral, buried at the same depth, and touching a corner of the grease trap in a commercial kitchen. The Clipping indicator appeared when trying to locate the camera sonde, suggesting the presence of a high voltage line. The SR-20's passive line locating mode quickly confirmed the line's presence so it could be located and marked prior to excavation.
